Following up on my previous post, the other song that caught my ear while working out this morning was "Das gute Gefuehl" by the group Juli - not as many good youtube videos for Juli as Wir Sind Helden unfortunately, so this is the best I could find for this group:

My New Obsession
I've been listening to a lot of German Pop music lately. It's a way of working on my vocabulary while I work out. Two bands in particular are somewhat similar: Juli and "Wir Sind Helden". Yesterday I couldn't stop listening to "Ein Elefant fuer Dich" by Wir Sind Helden and today I can't stop listening to "Die Zeit heilt alle Wunder".
also by Wir Sind Helden. The lyrics are particularly fun to decipher as a non-native speaker as naturally when I first heard the song I thought she was singing "Time heals all wounds" when in fact what she is saying is "Time heals all miracles." I didn't even realize this until I tried to google the title and google corrected me: "Do you mean zeit heilt alle wunder?" Fun stuff. Reminds me of Wordsworth's Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood.

Korner's Kant is out of print
I started once again trying to read S. Koerner's book on Kant, published by Penguin in 1970. My old copy is turning to dust. I think the first 20 pages or so are probably held together by the ink from all the underlining I did 25 years ago. Anyway, I just checked on Amazon, and apparently it's out of print. I can't say I'm surprised. I recently bought a used copy of Robert Redfield's "The Primitive World and Its Transformations" - also out of print, and another book from my student days.

Wake Me Up

We saw Elvis Costello and Bob Dylan in Manchester on Friday night. Bob Dylan was actually kind of boring (the same concert we have now seen three times in the past 3 years), but Elvis Costello was fantastic. I am at this moment listening to the "exclusive i-Tunes version" of the song "River in Reverse" over and over again. I wish I could insert it into this blog entry.

Free wi-fi at PDX

This is the first time I have tried to access my blog(s) from my Macbook. Maybe I don't want to give this little laptop up, not just yet. It's growing on me. Free wi-fi at PDX while waiting to board my flight. I just noticed that this macbook self-portrait taken here at the airport is a mirror-image. Interesting...

A new blog
I am on vacation in Munich and have decided to devote my blogging to a new genre: a blog written in German. You can find it here: http://schlaflosingerman.blogspot.com

I've just learned something new
I have been reading Viktor Klemperer's "LTI" - study of Nazi Word Usage. Naturally it has been thinking about word usage in blogs. Thanks to wikipedia, I have learned a new technical term for what I would call "diction": "register." A "register" in linguistics refers to a set or subset of vocabulary and word usage used in a particular setting or milieu.

Blog Speak
Re-reading my post of ieri I am struck by how I already use the cliched diction of a blogger. Yuck.

Getting ready for German class
Sitting in a truck packed with computer equipment. I'll be working a little late tonight tracking a sphere. Not a big deal, but tonight I have German Gesprachsgruppe at the local vocational high school. I figure if I get out of here by 8 PM, I can still make the second half of class. So I've been sitting here looking up appropriate vocabulary online so I can explain why I was late for class, in German. This is just as well, as I find that I don't have a lot to talk about in class, unless I make an effort to do something during the week that is worth talking about. Last week we went to see "Das Leben der Anderen" - the terrific German film that won the Oscar for Best Foreign Picture. That gave me something to discuss in my Monday discussion group.
It occurred to me yesterday that Catholics must have a similar problem when they go to confession: they have to have done something worth confessing.

for the LOVE OF GOD IT IS SPELLED SIENA
That might be the last message I ever post on Craig's List. I just can't take it anymore.
